“Mr. Beans”
,…the jumping, humping, barking, nipping, dog and people hating dog. Meet Mr. Beans. He is a 1.5 yr old rescued Cattle Dog with some not so cool behaviors he is struggling with. He doesn't have positive vibes out on his walk and will bark, lunge and aggress on people he doesn't know and other dogs. He also humps and nips his new family, especially his mom.
He has been through 6 wks of box retail training and 6 wks of one on one training with another trainer who contacted me for help. I am really glad he reached out to me. I was soooo excited to get the opportunity to help!
I had an online consultation with the owners and started them on some homework. As they were getting ready to go on vacation, we had to try to speed things up a bit because Mr. Beans needed a dog sitter and the pickens were slim! His pawrents didn't want to stress him out even further by placing him in an unfamiliar, strange place with other dogs at a boarding facility.
This was the first time I was able to meet Mr. Beans. I was able to make friends with him in about 10 minutes of being around him. His mom was in shock. The look on her face says it all! She didn't think it would go as well as it did and was literally speechless.
This isn't a post to fill my ego. It is meant to show that people can have limiting beliefs about their dog's ability to work through something that is challenging. This is meant to show that I didn't have to "pin him down, stare him in the face and show him who the boss was". I didn't have to put a choker on him, nor a prong or an e-collar to get him to stop lunging at me. These are all common myths and outdated, unnecessary practices! I never forced him once. I never took his power away. In fact, I want him to understand that he does have control of what happens to him.
What Mr. Beans needed was someone who really understood him, didn't live in a label of who he was, and helped his new family learn about him in a way that would help him with his behaviors in a kind and understanding way.
We still have much work to do. Behavior modification is not a one size fits all. It isn't a quick fix. It is a process that can take awhile to build. Our goal isn't for perfection but progress. Mr. Beans has a lot of learning to do and we are just getting started. This was my first time meeting him. Didn’t he do fantastic?? So far, so good!
